Childbirth Education Options

There are many options available for Childbirth Education in our area. The best piece of wisdom I can share with clients is that they attend an independent Childbirth Education program. Hospital-based 'free' childbirth education programs can sometimes provide helpful information for expectant parents, but more often than not they present information relevant to hospital policies and procedures, pharmaceutical pain relief availability, and discussion of the interventions and complications typical of modern obstetrical care.

Childbirth Education Organizations

  • BirthWorks®
  • BabyBodyBirth
  • Birthing From Within
  • Bradley Method®
  • HypnoBirthing®
  • Lamaze International
  • International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA)

These classes rarely focus on the more holistic aspects of pregnancy and birth such as nutrition, relaxation, and non-medical pain management, nor do they cover the possible risks involved with medications and interventions routinely performed in the hospital. There are many excellent independent childbirth preparation classes with varying philosophies - one of them is probably an excellent fit for you. Some of these classes begin early in pregnancy and have 8-12 sessions. Some educators may offer weekend intensive workshops, refresher courses, or private classes in your own home. Explore the links to the right to see which classes appeal to you.

Unless you are certain that you are committed to one of the well-known methods of childbirth preparation, you may want to consider taking classes offered by an independent educator. Often these classes combine the best aspects of the well-known philosophies with a great deal of relaxation techniques, body awareness, breathing, massage techniques, and information on breastfeeding and newborn care.
